WEDNESDAY, MAY 14: Deadline for Lilly Endowment Grants

The National Clergy Renewal Program, sponsored by the Lilly Endowment, which supports extended sabbaticals for pastors and a complementary set of activities for "congregational renewal" in their parishes, is now accepting applications for grants. A maximum of 120 congregations will receive grants of up to $45,000 each, of which $15,000 may be used for expenses associated with the renewal program. Christian congregations that have an ordained pastor with a master of divinity degree from an accredited theological school may apply. All young people of the diocese are invited. Activities will include football, volleyball, a bounce house, relay races, snow cones and slushies, a taco bar, water balloons, music and great fellowship. Youth Groups are asked to bring soda, water, or snacks to share.

"Bloom Where You Are Planted" The Rev. Canon Dr. Michael Battle will speak on the topic "Growing in Community," using material from his forthcoming book, Heaven on Earth. Province VIII DOK President Kathyleen Funk will also attend this Assembly, sharing information about plans for the Triennial Retreat in Anaheim in 2009, and answering questions during "Dessert with Kathyleen." THURSDAY – TUESDAY, May 29 – June 2: 40th Annual Antique Show & Sale St. Francis' Church 2200 Via Rosa (corner of Palos Verdes Blvd.), Palos Verdes Estates Information/discount coupon: 310.375.4617 or http://www.stfrancispv.org/ Quality dealers from Northern and Southern California, as well as Texas and Idaho, will be display and sell a dazzling array of 18th, 19th and early 20th century furniture, silver, prints, jewelry, china, pottery, rugs, Asian antiques, vintage Americana and more. Luncheon will be served daily on the brick patio, as well as afternoon tea and evening wine and cheese on the loggia. The Harvest Cupboard will feature homemade taste treats from the good cooks of the parish. The Garden Gazebo, the passion of several of the gardening enthusiasts of the church, will offer exotic flowering plants and garden accessories. The show is the longest running privately promoted charity antique show in Southern California. The show is sponsored by the Episcopal Church Women of St. Francis parish and is run and staffed entirely by church members and volunteers. The Preview Gala is Wednesday, May 28, 5:30 - 8:30 pm. A donation of $30 (advance sale--$35 at the door) is requested. Main show dates are Thursday, May 29 and Friday, May 31, 11 am to 6 pm, and Saturday, June 2 from 11 am to 4 pm. Admission is $7 per person.

AUGUST 3 – 12: Youth Pilgrimage to the Holy Land
Sponsored by the diocesan youth ministry. Limited to 20 young people ages 14-17. Led by Deb Neal, chair of the Program Group on Youth Ministries, and Chris Tumilty, intern to Bishop Jon Bruno, both of whom were members of a 42-member pilgrimage group that accompanied Bruno to Israel in August 2007. Itinerary will include visits to Bethlehem, the Galilee, and Jerusalem. Five adult chaperones will accompany the young people. Guide will be Iyad Qumri, a Palestinian Episcopalian who has worked with many previous pilgrimage groups from the diocese. The areas of the Holy Land to be visited by the group are very safe, and every precaution will be taken to ensure a safe journey. Cost: $2500 per person (subject to change), which includes airfare, accommodations, meals, and all entry fees. Most nights will be spent at St. George's Cathedral and College in Jerusalem, a short walk from the walls of the Old City. All congregations in the Diocese are welcome to attend. Clergy presenting candidates must submit the names of candidates, and whether they will be confirmed or received, via e-mail to churchoffice@stjohnsla.org no later than Tuesday, October 14. Clergy need to pre-register all candidates so that the Procathedral staff can plan appropriately. Candidates should plan on arriving no later than 9:15 to meet with the bishops. Clergy should bring registers to the ProCathedral office for signatures when they arrive. Clergy are invited to vest in cassock, surplice and white stoles.
